The system works by the car transmitting the radio signal, which is picked up by the key fob which in turn sends a reply signal to the car. This is then recognized by the vehicle and it will typically unlock the doors or switch on the interior lighting (if the system is set up to do so).
Some variations of keyless entry don't require any fobs at all instead, they use an app on a smartphone which can transmit an electronic signal directly to the car. This is also known as a phone-as key, or a digital-key. It's an excellent way to allow other drivers to access your car without having to hand over the keys.
It's important to know that keyless entry systems aren't completely foolproof and there have been cases of people who had their cars taken away using this technology.
